Because of their size head lice can be very difficult to see, even when a close inspection of the scalp is taking place. To confirm head lice infestation, the best way to find a louse is through a method called detection combing. It is an accurate and dependable method for obtaining a diagnosis and requires the use of a fine-toothed head lice comb. It has a very small tooth spacing of 0.2-0.3 millimetres and can trap the smallest of lice. It is most effective when used on wet hair.
