This could be a sign that your child has an infection of the outer ear canal. This infection is commonly known as ‘Swimmer’s ear’ and is most often a bacterial infection that affects the skin of the outer ear canal. It is known as Swimmer’s ear as frequent water exposure, like dunking your head in the bath, is one of its main causes. The itchiness that your child feels may also be accompanied by swelling, drainage, pain and a feeling that their ear is full. Because it is a bacterial infection, antibiotic drops are often the main form of treatment for this particular cause of earache. It is also important to prevent any large amounts of water getting into your child’s ear to help them recover.
